What are the pros and cons of State Farm auto insurance?

State Farm auto insurance is a popular choice for most drivers, and for good reason. State Farm has many positive aspects and consistently ranks high in almost all categories involving car insurance.

Below is a list of some of the biggest pros of State Farm:

  • Below-average rates for most drivers. State Farm has some of the cheapest car insurance rates in the nation and is a top choice for high-risk and young drivers.
  • Strong overall customer satisfaction. Most policyholders have indicated that they received above-average customer service with State Farm.
  • Large network of available agents. Customers who prefer to speak with someone quickly will find excellent service from State Farm agents.

Even though State Farm has a lot to offer, there are still some cons:

  • High rates for drivers with poor credit. State Farm drivers with poor credit rates are the highest among top insurers.
  • No GAP insurance is available. State Farm does not offer GAP insurance, so you might want to look elsewhere if you have a large car loan.
  • No new car replacement or vanishing deductible options. There is also no new car replacement option, and you will not be rewarded with a lower deductible for staying claim-free.

Drivers looking for competitive rates and reliable customer service should consider State Farm. Even if you don’t have a squeaky clean driving record, or if you have no driving record at all, State Farm can offer you affordable quotes.

But if your credit score is lacking or you have a large auto loan, State Farm might not be your best option.

How is State Farm rated by experts and customers?

State Farm has received above-average ratings from all of the experts in the industry. J.D. Power gave the company above-average ratings in customer satisfaction and claims handling.

A.M. Best rated State Farm with an A+ (Superior) financial rating. This score reflects a company’s ability to pay out claims. So policyholders can feel secure with State Farm’s financial standing.

In addition, the National Association of Insurance Commissioners (NAIC) indicated that State Farm received fewer complaints than the national average.

Overall, State Farm has excellent ratings from customers and experts.

How much is State Farm car insurance?

State Farm is one of the cheapest car insurance companies in the industry, with an average annual rate of $1,267 — $275 lower than the national average.

To see how insurance rates vary across the country, take a look at the map below.

However, keep in mind that several factors come into play when deciding your car insurance rates. Everything from your coverage type to your age to your driving history will play a role in how insurance companies set your rates.

We go into more detail in the sections below about how much you can expect to pay for insurance, depending on your unique situation.

How much is minimum coverage with State Farm?

Almost all states require drivers to carry a minimum liability coverage, and some require personal injury protection, medical payments, and/or uninsured motorist insurance.

Liability insurance does not cover your vehicle, but it pays for other drivers’ damages in an accident you cause.

Currently, State Farm has the third-lowest minimum coverage rates, falling behind only Geico and USAA. Take a look at the table below to compare Geico liability rates with those of other top insurance competitors.

State Farm’s minimum liability insurance is $1,191 per year on average, with the national average being $1,463. That’s an annual savings of over $260.

How much is full coverage with State Farm?

Full coverage insurance will typically cost you more, but it also covers more. Full coverage insurance includes not only liability coverage but also collision and comprehensive.

State Farm has the fourth-lowest average rates for drivers with full coverage at $1,348 annually. The table below shows how State Farm stacks up against other top insurance companies.

State Farm’s rates are nearly 17% lower than the national average of $1,621.

How much is State Farm insurance for teen drivers?

One of the most significant factors that influence rates is age, and adding a teenager to your policy can cause your premium to skyrocket. However, State Farm is a great choice for young drivers and has some of the best rates for parents adding a teen to their policy.

State Farm has the lowest rate increase among its top competitors for teen drivers, but the rates will always be highest for these young, inexperienced drivers.

This table shows how State Farm beats out the competition when it comes to teenage drivers.

The average rate for guardians adding a teen driver to their State Farm policy is $1,003 per year. This is substantially lower than even Geico’s $1,958 — a nearly $1,000 difference.

How much is State Farm insurance for young adults?

State Farm has relatively low rates for drivers between the ages of 18 to 25.

On average, drivers will see their rates gradually decrease until reaching 25 years old, and then rates start to level off. This is because younger drivers tend to have more accidents even after exiting their teenage years.

State Farm’s rates for young adults are still below the national average at $2,407 per year. Below are the rates for young adult drivers with State Farm compared to rates from other insurers.

On average, Geico is another affordable option at $1,783 per year for young adult drivers.

How much is State Farm insurance for senior drivers?

Most drivers will see their rates stay relatively consistent through their 30s, 40s, and 50s. When drivers reach age 65, they may notice their rates going back up.

State Farm offers relatively good rates for senior drivers at an annual average of $1,423. Below we compare this with top competitors in the industry.

Again, Geico also provides some of the lowest rates for senior drivers at $1,197 per year.

Both State Farm and Geico offer some of the most affordable car insurance rates to drivers of all ages.

How does your driving history affect your State Farm rates?

Your driving history is an essential factor in determining your auto insurance rates. Drivers should always expect their rates to increase after an accident or traffic ticket.

Good news: these drivers with a not-so-perfect driving record might find some of the cheapest insurance quotes with State Farm. State Farm offers the second-cheapest insurance rates for drivers who have a speeding ticket on their record at $1,607 annually.

This table shows how State Farm ranks with its competitors in regards to single traffic ticket rates.

Even though State Farm ranks top in many national averages for risky drivers, remember to always compare quotes from multiple insurers. Just because an insurer ranks first on a national level does not mean it’s the best choice in your state or for your unique needs.

How does your credit history affect your State Farm rates?

In contrast to State Farm’s cheap rates for drivers with less-than-stellar driving history, its rates for drivers with poor credit are the highest among the top insurance companies.

Insurers take credit scores into consideration when determining rates because there is a statistical link between good credit and good drivers. Drivers with good credit are less likely to file claims, according to most insurers.

State Farm has the highest rates on our list for drivers with poor credit histories.

Also, not all states allow insurance companies to use credit history when determining rates. California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Michigan have passed laws banning this practice.

With so many factors affecting how each insurance company creates its own rates, getting at least three insurance quotes from different companies is always recommended to find the best fit for your needs. That way you can compare State Farm auto quotes against others to ensure you’re getting the best price.

What types of car insurance does State Farm offer?

Drivers with State Farm have almost all of the common types of car insurance coverage available to them.

Here is a list of all of the different auto insurance options State Farm offers:

  • Property damage liability. Pays for damages to someone else’s property from an accident for which you’re at fault.
  • Bodily injury liability. Pays for the other party’s bodily injury, damages or death from an accident when you’re at fault.
  • Collision coverage. Pays for damages to your vehicle due to an accident, no matter who’s at fault.
  • Comprehensive coverage. Covers your vehicle damage caused by theft, vandalism, flood, fire, or other incidents not involving a collision.
  • Medical payments. Covers your medical expenses resulting from an accident.
  • Personal injury protection (PIP). Pays for medical treatment, missed wages, and other accident-related expenses.
  • Uninsured/underinsured motorist. Helps to cover your injuries or property damage caused by another driver with no insurance or insufficient insurance.

State Farm also offers emergency road service, rideshare, and classic car insurance.

However, State Farm does not offer GAP coverage. So if you have financed a brand new vehicle and need extra protection on your loan, you might want to consider a different company that offers GAP insurance.

What is State Farm’s Steer Clear Program?

Another opportunity for young drivers to save with State Farm is by taking advantage of the company’s Steer Clear app.

Drivers under 25 years of age with no at-fault accidents for the past three years are eligible to participate in the State Farm Steer Clear program. This app provides five training modules that consist of driving scenarios, lessons, and quizzes for the driver to complete within six months.

However, drivers with a poor credit history might find cheaper rates elsewhere. It is also worth noting that State Farm does not offer GAP insurance.

While State Farm might make an excellent choice for you, every driver is unique, and we recommend that you shop around with multiple insurance companies before making your decision.

The agent phoned me some time later and said I should have not cashed the check, it was an error on their part and I need to pay them that money ($119.83) back or they will cancel my insurance. So, I had to pay them again, or risk losing my insurance coverage. DO NOT USE THIS AGENT. THEY ARE TOTALLY IRRESPONSIBLE AND DO NOT TAKE ACCOUNTABILITY FOR THEIR ACTIONS.

I’ve had State Farm car insurance for 15 years and have decided to cancel my insurance with them because of his mismanagement of my account. He overcharged me and then his company sent texts and emails stating my car insurance would be imminently cancelled. When I called to address this [REDACTED NAME] [REDACTED NAME] said this was an error and then charged me a made up number less than the original amount. When I explicitly asked if I owed anything else, I was told I did not. Likely to get me off the phone so he could return to not doing his job. I still continued to receive impending cancellation notices which [REDACTED NAME] [REDACTED NAME] kept apologizing for. Shows how organized that office is. [REDACTED NAME] [REDACTED NAME] then proceeded to overcharge me the original amount on my next bill, I presume thinking I wouldn’t notice. He then insisted that this is the amount I’m supposed to pay. The inconsistency and the lying is inexcusable. I have never spent so much time emailing and calling an insurance company. If [REDACTED NAME] [REDACTED NAME] knew how to do his job like all the other agents I have worked with over years then I would have stayed loyal to State Farm. He should be fired by State Farm.

My policy has been randomly canceled. Now there’s some loyalty for ya huh? I did nothing!!!! NOTHING yet because other members in my household had claims MY policy gets canceled. 39 years wow really? No wonder they got downgraded they have no good business sense. That is just a dumb way to loose revenue not gain. Unbelievable. And Gigi doesn’t care she is insensitive to clients regardless. She said “hey this is how I pay my bills” wow so just cancel people who have done NOTHING WRONG ya that’s fantastic for gaining revenue and building a brokerage. Good Job Gigi!! You should be proud for canceling a 39 year loyal customer who ended up going elsewhere getting the same coverage for cheaper. So glad you have no idea how to maintain revenue and build a solid business. Bravo to ya! Let’s also not forget you brought up a claim my husband had. And I had to remind you he has been dead for 8 years. Yep good job! Your response of trying to point out they are my family members is ridiculous. The bottom line is MY policy was canceled for something others did family or not. I did NOT deserve that kind of treatment after 39 years of loyalty. You as an agent should have done something. I’ve spoken to a couple other agents and it appears you’re just not really sure how to get things done for your clients.

You’ll get a different answer to the same question every time you talk to a different claim specialist. When it comes to getting your car fixed expect to have to pay for repairs. I have full coverage and had damage done to my car. When I took it to a shop recommended by the dealer the State Farm adjuster undercut the shops prices left and right leaving me with a $1167.00 bill. Then they give me bs excuses why I’m out of pocket. I can only imagine what they would do if my house was damaged from a Hurricane or wind storm. This has been a terrible experience for my wife and I and will be switching to a different insurance company in the near future.

I unfortunately hit a deer and my front end was damaged to a small extent. State Farm made my car repair and rental car process seamless. Since there was no one involved in my accident besides myself, I decided to try their app to log my claim and I had a very easy experience. I didn't have to submit photos since it was a deer that caused it and it gave me next steps clearly and quickly. It gave me a list of collision centers and rental car places, let me know what my rental car allowance was since I had recently added that to my policy, and let me know my deductible clearly at the end. I did everything through the app. Within a few hours, someone called me from State Farm to make sure I was okay and to ask if I needed any clarification or help navigating the app. She was caring and easy to talk to. I also love my agent, Bob Garrigan, and his whole team. They have always been there to discuss things with, to make good decisions with, and to support whatever I choose to do. I have never felt taken advantage of. I had two other accident claims with them a few years ago. Both went smoothly as well - both times, men rear-ended me. The first gentleman lied about it to avoid a policy issue on his end and my agent stayed the course and continued to patiently work with his insurance company until they took ownership of his actions and paid the claim. The second time I was rear-ended, the young man didn't contest his part in it, but the collision center was difficult to work with and State Farm had to call them out for their poor performance and work on my behalf. This is how an insurance company should treat their customer. I plan to stay with State Farm for as long as they give five star service.

To "Insure" a downfall

State Farm, as with many insurance companies care about only 1 thing. Money. I think the best way to understand it is just to watch the Incredibles, and that scene with Bob at his job. Does it matter who is at fault? No. Does it matter what the circumstances were? No. Does it matter if anybody is being unethical? No. What matters is the cold, hard cash. You can pay thousands of dollars, have a fender bender with barely a scratch and OOOP, they had to pay money to fix it? Strike one. Soon enough, you are out with yesterday's garbage. Heaven forbid you have a child learning how to drive and something goes wrong. I can promise you it will haunt them for years to come. They say they only look at the past three years. That would be a lie. They say they have your back, and that would be a lie. Any possibility they have to pay anything, even if only partial fault, they can, and will, throw the sack at ya. With that said, it does have some lovely agents. I could rave about how awesome they are. Heck, an agent thought it would be ridiculous to sack somebody over what happened to me, but, you know, he appealed and the company still said "Whaaat, we must pay money even though the person has barely had issues? No way!" Amazing how they can hire good ethical employees, but can't be a good ethical business. You can spend way more in premiums than they have ever had to pay for anything, but who cares? They don't want to to ever have to do their job. Insurance is required by law. But what is the point of having insurance when at the snap of the fingers they can dig up something that happened when you were learning how to drive and compare it to a small fender bender in the future and say "We don't want that!" What is to feel safe about? The motto "we got your back... as long as you are the only one who has to pay us anything. Ever." Should be their slogan. You can't learn from mistakes, even if you never make them again, you can't have complications with a new license without it haunting your future. You can't be human, and sometimes make human error. Insurance is there to ensure you will be ok. The only thing state farm ensures is their path to your wallet, and a way to ditch if any of YOUR money ever has to come back to you because things happen.

Ridiculous Rate Increases

They just raised my rate by $100.00 which was bad enough but they raised my mother's $400.00. She's on a fixed income and her rate was already ridiculously high. She has a good driving record and has been with SF for decades. When we made a move to the West coast, they doubled what she was paying back home (from a little over $600.00 per yr to $1200 every six months) and now to raise it another $400.00 after six months is adding insult to inju...

When we made a move to the West coast, they doubled what she was paying back home (from a little over $600.00 per yr to $1200 every six months) and now to raise it another $400.00 after six months is adding insult to injury. She worked her entire life and always paid her bill on time. No accidents, tickets, etc. No way she can afford $1600.00 every six months. That's if they don't raise it again in 6 months. It is appalling that they treat decades long customers this way. She's supposed to be enjoying retirement but how is she supposed to do that when she can't drive? If you think being with SF forever will help you in your twilight years forget it. They don't care about longterm business. Obviously, they raised her rate so much because they know she can't pay that much and they get to drop her without being called out for age discrimination. Changing companies ASAP.

State Farm Insurance review

The State Farm Drive Safe & Save app is below average. Doesn\'t record every trip as it should. Requires my cellphone to have everything on (Location, Storage, Bluetooth, Physical Location, Phone, etc.), but lowers your trip score if the phone moves, jostles, or slides at all while you drive, A pain in the neck to deal with it every time. Also, it recorded a trip I did not make in my vehicle, but that my spouse drove us in his vehicle. So far af...

Also, it recorded a trip I did not make in my vehicle, but that my spouse drove us in his vehicle. So far after1 month its only an $11.10 discount for 6 months, but we will see. I would not recommend this app. Allstatea was much more user friendly and less \"Big Brother.\"

Personal article policy

[REDACTED NAME] was very helpful with my personal articles policy. I made my payment for 2023 to my auto policy. She was very helpful to ensure payment when to the correct department.
